Green Party Minister John Gormley calls for the Taoiseach to clarify his position

Minister for the Environment and Local Government John Gormley

Today Green Party Coalition Minister John Gormley called on the Taoiseach to make a statement to address the considerable public disquiet following revelations last week at the Mahon Tribunal.

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government responsible for instating Tribunals said today: “I think he (Mr. Ahern) knows it’s in his best interest and that of his party and the country at large that a clarifying statement is made.”

Minister Gormley, echoed Mary Harney, the Minister for Health, and her party colleague Senator Fiona O’Malley who had both called for the Taoiseach to make a public statement concerning revelations from his constituency secretary to the Mahon Tribunal. Mrs Harney told reporters: “I’m simply saying there is considerable public disquiet as a result of Gráinne Carruth’s evidence last week and that public disquiet needs to be dispelled quickly.”

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has maintained that he did not lodge sums of English currency into his bank accounts but this was refuted last week with evidence given by Ms. Carruth that she had lodged 15,500 pounds into Mr. Ahern’s Irish Permanent account and those of his daughters Georgina and Celia.
