BERTIE AHERN TD appeared in the witness box today to be cross-examined by Des O’Neill SC about several controversial lodgements of UK pounds into his accounts and those of his daughters in 1994.
The former head of government, who resigned following evidence revealed at the Inquiry less than a month ago, today explained that any lodgements to his accounts over 1,000 pounds likely consisted of his winnings at the races: “I am interested in horse racing and over the years I have placed bets on horse races”.
Mr. Ahern went on to recall one such win in 1996 – two successful bets, which he lodged into his daughters’ bank accounts.
Mr Ahern had previously told the Inquiry into planning corruption that he had not received any sterling into these accounts, based in the Irish Permanent Building Society in Drumcondra.
