Minister for Health and Children Mary Harney has called for her Cabinet colleague and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern “to act quickly to address considerable public disquiet” raised by his former secretary’s evidence before the Mahon Tribunal. Ms Grainne Carruth, Fianna Fail constituency secretary in St. Lukes, admitted to the Tribunal last week that she had mis-led the Tribunal by telling them that she had never made lodgements into Mr. Ahern’s account.

GRAINNE CARRUTH broke down during cross-examination by Des O’Neill SC today.
After two days of vigourous questioning, Bertie Ahern’s former constituency secretary admitted that she had lodged 15,500 sterling into Mr. Ahern’s accounts.

GRAINNE CARRUTH, constituency secretary in St. Lukes, told Des O’Neill SC for the Tribunal that she could not recall lodging sterling amounts into Mr. Ahern’s bank account in Irish Permanent. But statements from 1994 show several exchanges of sterling followed minutes later, at the same teller, by several deposits into Mr. Ahern and his two daughter’s accounts.
